In this video, you’ll add a new custom metric. Major topics include: Example formulas and use cases, using the formula editor, and consuming a custom metric.

Custom metrics allow you to measure value unique to your business model–such as an increase in a customer’s revenue, productivity, or quality. You can find the formula editor within Data Modeler, and clicking Add > Custom Metric from the Account Information tab.

The available types of data you can use in a new custom metric are: Totango’s out-of-the-box calculated metrics–including engagement and license utilization, any number attribute–including named attributes from Totango or number attributes you’ve added, or usage related to specific activity count or module count.

You can learn more about usage data in other videos, but let’s look at a simple example as an introduction. Say I want to understand how many of my customers are using a specific module in my product per month. Without a custom metric, I can still create a segment using a filter to show me this data point where activity is greater than 1 in the last 30 days. But, if I create a custom metric for this data point, now Totango can start calculating this value for historical purposes so that I can filter on change in values.

Additionally, having this data point as a custom metric means that I can use it in my health configurations, reports, account profiles, and more. Another advantage to using a custom metric is the ability to perform some sort of calculation between one or more metrics.

Let’s say we want to know what our Annual Recurring Revenue (or ARR) is per user. Within the formula editor, I’ll give it a name and choose the dimension. We’ll find the contract value, which is listed here as a common shortcut. Then we’ll divide that value by the number of active users in the last 30 days. Since we’re dealing with a dollar amount, we’ll also set the type to currency and specify the decimal format.

Now we can click preview to see results for a sampling of our accounts. We can even add a specific account to spot check the data. Some of our accounts show that there were no active users in the last 30 days, which is why we see a divide by zero notation. In that case, no value will be recorded for those accounts. Custom metrics are not calculated on accounts that are in any 'canceled' status.

Once we save, our metric is defined, and Totango starts calculating the values. You can view the processing state by clicking this icon. Once that status is complete, you can use the new metric in segments, reports, or your health configuration, like we saw earlier, and Zoe. We can also display this metric on the account profile by clicking the gear icon next to the section we want to see it, and adding the metric to the display.

For even more advanced metrics if using account hierarchies, refer to Hierarchy Rollups.
