In this video you’ll learn about managing products in Totango. Major topics include Product ID and product accounts.

If your company sells only one product (or no product at all), you may have a flat hierarchy. However, if you have multiple products, representing products as their own account type in your account hierarchy structure in Totango gives you the ability to segment customers that own (or do not own) certain products. You can also segment via product usage data per product and measure the health of each product separately.

Including a product level is generally best practice only if you have multiple products and your customers' contracts are based per product. If used, products are always the last level in the hierarchy, also known as the ultimate child. If you do need products, you can configure them within Settings > Data Management > Hierarchy Types.

Click to add, and you’ll see that each product requires a name and a Product ID. Now, you can’t change the ID later, so be sure you’ve modeled your ID structure the way you want to see it. You can also optionally add an image. If you don’t add one, Totango provides a thumbnail using a letter to represent the name. You’ll see this represented later in the hierarchy navigation and on the parent account profile.

Once you add a product, you can now associate it with a product account. For example, locate the product account record, or create new one, and set the product ID of that record to match the product ID we just added. Since I just manually created a new product account, I’m also going to specify the parent account. Once associated, I can refresh and now see the product display in the hierarchy.

And, if we add the growth widget on the account profile of its parent, Totango automatically lists all of the products NOT owned by that parent account. You can access additional settings to determine how product account IDs are searched and managed.
